Separating Hydraulic Fracturing Microseismicity From Induced Seismicity by Bayesian Inference of Non‐Linear Pressure Diffusivity

چکیده
Abstract Microseismic data acquired during hydraulic stimulations is routinely used to characterize fracture (HF) propagation away from a wellbore. When the include induced seismicity (IS) related fault slip, separating HF‐related and IS‐related events essential for HF treatment optimization IS mitigation. Linear non‐linear analytical diffusivity models can be interpret microseismic quantify of HFs, but their accuracy reduces when significant microseismicity present. A Bayesian quantile regression extend these existing contaminated with IS. plausible ellipsoid filters that are clearly anomalous prior regression. The effectively separates in case study all stages without interpretative bias. This reveals faults directed connected as well those solely seismicity.

Bayesian inversion of pressure diffusivity from microseismicity
We have considered the problem of using microseismic data to characterize the flow of injected fluid during hydraulic fracturing. We have developed a simple probabilistic physical model that directly ties the fluid pressure in the subsurface during the injection to observations of induced microseismicity. This tractable model includes key physical parameters that affect fluid pressure, rock fai...
متن کاملA Review of Numerical Simulation Strategies for Hydraulic Fracturing, Natural Fracture Reactivation and Induced Microseismicity Prediction
Hydraulic fracturing, natural fracture reactivation and resulting induced microseismicity are interconnected phenomena involved in shale gas exploitation. Due to their multi-physics and their complexity, deep understanding of these phenomena as well as their mutual interaction require the adoption of coupled mechanical and fluid flow approaches. Modeling these systems is a challenging procedure...
متن کاملLocation of Microearthquakes Induced by Hydraulic Fracturing
This paper examines the problem of locating microearthquakes induced by hydraulic fracturing using seismic arrival time data. In addition to the use of absolute arrival times measured for individual events, we consider the use of differential arrival times amongst a set of two or more seismic events as a means of constralning their locations relative to one another. Differential arrival times c...
متن کاملHydraulic Fracturing and Seismicity in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin
The development of most unconventional oil and gas resources relies upon subsurface injection of very large volumes of fluids, which can induce earthquakes by activating slip on a nearby fault. During the last 5 years, accelerated oilfield fluid injection has led to a sharp increase in the rate of earthquakes in some parts of North America. In the central United States, most induced seismicity ...
متن کاملDiscrete Element Simulation of Hydraulic Fracturing and Induced Seismicity in Engineered Geothermal Systems
In this paper the Discrete Element Model (DEM) ‘ESyS_Particle’, previously used to model fracture of brittle rocks and earthquake processes, is further developed to be able to be applied to the hydraulic fracturing process in Engineered Geothermal Systems (EGS). The advantage of DEM is that large deformations and dynamic process can be modelled easily. ESyS_Particle has been used to successfull...
